FILM FEST
INTERVIEW WITH Carlox Cadena
How long have you been doing movies? How did you decide to start making movies?
R. For many years, I wanted to make movies, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I formally made the decision to pursue it. It's been approximately three years since I made the best decision of my life.
Why did you do this project?
R. There have always been topics very close to me, and this film allowed me to address and experiment with them freely. It makes me happy to creatively explore elements that might evolve into a powerful and honest narrative in the future.
(If you can say). How much budget did you have to do this project?
R. I don't have the exact calculation, but it was a low budget.
Was it self-funded or did you get budget/producers/investors?
R. Half and half. I was able to cover it myself, but I also had the support of my producers and friends.
How long did it take from the initial idea to being able to release?
R. It was actually a matter of a few months, maybe five. I wanted to work as intuitively as possible.
Are you happy with the result?
R. Absolutely. When I finished the editing, I felt a great sense of fulfillment.
What phase is this project in right now? Are you in the initial phase of sending it to festivals, middle phase or finishing the circuit?
R. Initial phase.
How has your experience been with the festivals so far? Where do you think they should improve?
R. It's hard to say; it's just starting its festival circuit. However, we've already won some awards, which is a good indicator.
Normally, filmmakers use many references, favorite directors, favorite movies, etc. Were you inspired by any director or film? If so, tell us your references.
R. Of course, I had many influences, specifically "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" by Apichatpong Weerasethakul; all the films by Tsai Ming-liang, Carlos Reygadas, etc. Even some rap albums I listened to during the creative process.
Your favorite movie?
R. Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives.
Favorite series?
R. I don’t have a favorite.
Do you see yourself making movies in 5 years? Where do you see yourself?
R. Absolutely. I find myself in the pre-production of a new significant project. The location doesn't matter as long as I can continue making films.
Do you have any other project in mind?
R. Yes, a film where there is a strong connection to experiences from my childhood.
What do you ask for the future? (cinematographically speaking)
R. I want to leave my mark, to achieve success by telling the kind of stories I want to tell.
Your best experience in a movie theater?
R. So far, The good, the bad and the ugly
