FILM FEST
INTERVIEW WITH Fernando Doménech
How long have you been doing movies? How did you decide to start making movies?
Well, practically the day before yesterday, I had previously filmed a couple of short films, I had taken film courses, even as a professional figurative actor and helped with what they asked me for in friends' projects. But my first professional approach to cinema has been with Subversion
Why did you do this project?
Because he was the one who could produce, I had written several scripts and this one could be filmed with two main characters, four secondary characters who only had one day of work and with few locations that I had at my disposal at that time. I thought now was the time, or now or never.
(If you can say). How much budget did you have to do this project?
Around 10,000 Euros and many favors. I think 10,000 Euros is considered a no-budget film in the industry, right? (laughs)
Was it self-funded or did you get budget/producers/investors?
Subversion was a self-produced film, I didn't even consider asking anyone for money because I was clear that no one was going to lend me money. That said, a lot of people helped me with locations, costumes and other things that made the production of the film cheaper and to whom I am eternally grateful.
How long did it take from the initial idea to being able to release?
Well, the truth is that much of the script was written in 2019 with the idea of carrying it out in 2020, but the pandemic delayed filming until 2022 and then the editing, the truth is that it also took longer because I and the editor were very meticulous. and we gave the rough ones a lot of thought to get the best result, and we also couldn't dedicate all the time we wanted to it because we had to attend to our other or real jobs.
Are you happy with the result?
Yes, although I am not the best person to evaluate it, but in general terms yes, there is always something that I would do differently today and something else that had to be filmed or adapted to the limitations we had and that of course when I wrote the script imagined them differently.
What phase is this project in right now? Are you in the initial phase of sending it to festivals, middle phase or finishing the circuit?
We are at the beginning of the festival circuit.
How has your experience been with the festivals so far? Where do you think they should improve?
Well, we are really happy because the acceptance at the festivals is very high, in a very short time we have managed to be in 20 Official Selections and we have received 19 awards for actors, technicians, film, direction, script...
I am very new to this and it would be hasty to judge what festivals get right and what they fail, the only thing I am clear about is that it is the only way for films like mine and many others to have a window so they can be seen and if there are luck distributed or sold.
Normally, filmmakers use many references, favorite directors, favorite movies, etc. Were you inspired by any director or film? If so, tell us your references.
In the case of subversion, more than in my references and in those who may be my favorite directors, it is influenced by the way of acting of great masters of the B series such as Jees Franco, John Cassavetes, George A. Romero, Roger Corman himself and many others...who managed to make a virtue of the scarcity of means.
Your favorite movie?
That is the million dollar question because you can go blank, say one movie or say three hundred movies. I would tell you Steven Spielberg's Jaws because I think it is a perfect movie, unbeatable in all its aspects. I don't know how many times I have seen it in my life, although maybe tomorrow you will ask me this question again and I will tell you another movie.
Favorite series?
The phenomenon of series has burst into our lives more recently with the rise of digital platforms and I think that they are consumed in a different way, they pass through our lives more quickly, we see one, another, then another but they do not remain so fixed in our minds. like a movie that has impacted us.
You can say many things like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and of course Spanish series that are being made with authentic mastery like La Unidad, Sagrada Familia, SkyRojo to name a few.
Do you see yourself making movies in 5 years? Where do you see yourself?
I hope and wish that
Do you have any other project in mind?
If we are in the pre-production phase with all the madness that entails, castings, recruiting technical equipment, locations, matching dates, etc...
I hope to be able to tell you soon that my new movie is a reality.
What do you ask of 2023 cinematographically speaking?
That Subversion can be seen by as many people as possible and of course that it is accessible to anyone who is interested in seeing it.
Your best experience in a movie theater?
The best experiences have been linked to my childhood, the magic of summer cinema or the double sessions on Sundays in winter that we went to see with friends and without our parents and that were experienced as an event. It's very sad that movie theaters are really dying.
