INTERVIEW WITH Gin Hammond

How long have you been doing movies? How did you decide to start making movies?

This is my first time producing a movie, though I have acted and dialect-coached small, independent films in the past.

Why did you do this project?

I did this project so that people who are “passing”/multiracial/ethnically ambiguous can find community.

(If you can say). How much budget did you have to do this project?

60k

Was it self-funded or did you get budget/producers/investors?

Both

How long did it take from the initial idea to being able to release?

From initial idea to production was really fast, only a few weeks.  Then I was cast in a couple of plays in the fall and winter, which slowed things down.  We’re in post now.

Are you happy with the result?

So far so good! I just wish Kamala Harris had been elected because it would have increased the desire of the general populace to understand what it’s like to be multiracial.

What phase is this project in right now? Are you in the initial phase of sending it to festivals, middle phase or finishing the circuit?

Post and reaching out to festivals.

How has your experience been with the festivals so far? Where do you think they should improve?

Just starting now.

Normally, filmmakers use many references, favorite directors, favorite movies, etc. Were you inspired by any director or film? If so, tell us your references.

Jenny Tian’s “Picture This” was inspirational.

Do you see yourself making movies in 5 years? Where do you see yourself?

Mostly acting in Europe.

Do you have any other project in mind?

Returning the Bones, a series based on an award-winning novel I wrote.

What do you ask for the future? (cinematographically speaking)

All the abundance the Universe has to offer!  In other words, full funding and an amazing, enthusiastic, kind, highly-skilled team.

Your best experience in a movie theater?

Lawrence of Arabia.  I’ve seen it in movie theatres three times.
